Crew are needed to help rig the balloon and to follow in a chase vehicle. Typically, after joining BAV you would go on club trips where you'd get involved in crewing, having the odd ride and getting to know who's who. You'd be unlikely to have your own balloon, so if you wish to train as a balloon pilot you would be dependent on getting instruction in somebody else's, usually that of an authorised club instructor. Although the course itself is not long, club training usually continues over a couple of years. Amateur ballooning in Victoria is seasonal, in that very little happens during the bushfire season. There is usually a one week training camp held somewhere in New South Wales or Victoria mid-winter and that's where progress tends to be made. If time is of the essence, Balloon flights of Bendigo can provide commercial instruction.

Student Pilot Certificate (SPC) This is the first step on the way to becoming a fully fledged balloon pilot. These certificates are issued by the Australian Ballooning Federation (ABF) and requires membership of that organisation. The certificate enables you to receive instruction on all aspects of flying a balloon. Most student pilots have first had exposure to being balloon crew, so they have a good understanding of what is required to be a balloon pilot.

Private Pilots Certificate (PPC) This is the piece of paper that most people strive for. Once you have done the required training and passed a series of theory and practical examinations you are able to go flying by yourself. Once people have their PPC they usually look at purchasing their own balloon so they can fly when and where they want to.

Balloon Ownership There are not many rental balloons available in Australia. Most balloons are owned by individuals and are a very personal item. Some second-hand balloons are available for purchase but you should seek advice from several people in the club before purchasing used equipment. There is only one manufacturer of balloons in Australia, Sydney based Kavanagh Balloons. They produce the most popular sport balloon in Australia and have been in the industry for 30 years.

The First Step Why not come along to one of our monthly meetings? You can find details at the foot of the JOIN US page. Meanwhile, try your hand at flying the balloon simulator. But do read it's Help page first!
