How can I become involved?
Balloon Crew
A balloon is a large aircraft that needs around 4 people to get it ready for flight. The people who are not flying are needed to follow the balloon in the vehicle to retrieve the balloon at the end of the flight. The people who do this are called Crew. Balloon teams are always looking for extra crew who are enthusiastic and keen to learn about the sport.
Crewing offers the best entry point to the sport. In most cases if you have been crewing a couple of times you will have been for a flight as well. This is the pay off for the crew, they can fly for nothing. Crewing is the most social area of the sport. In most cases you will be with other experienced crew who can get you involved in the social activities of the club.
Student Pilot Certificate (SPC)
This is the first step on the way to becoming a fully fledged balloon pilot. These certificates are issued by the Australian Ballooning Federation (ABF) and requires membership of that organisation. A student pilot certificate enables you to receive instruction on all aspects of flying the balloon. Most student pilots have first had exposure to being balloon crew so they can get a good basis on what is required to be a balloon pilot and to get more familiar with the equipment and responsibilities.
Private Pilots Certificate (PPC)
This is the piece of paper that most people strive for. Once you have done the required training, and passed a series of theory and practical examinations you are able to go flying by yourself. Most people who get to this stage have been in the sport for at least two years. Once people have their PPC they usually look at purchasing their own balloon so they can fly when and where they want to.
Balloon Ownership
There are not many rental balloons available in Australia, as most balloons are owned by individuals and they are a very personal item. Some second hand balloons are available for purchase but you should seek advice from several people in the club before purchasing used equipment.
There is only one manufacturer of balloons in Australia. Based in Sydney, Kavanagh Balloons. They are the most popular sport balloon in Australia and have been building balloons for 30 years.
